How NFC Google Review Cards Work

A complete guide for business owners: the tap-to-review technology, how pre-programming works, and why no app is required for you or your customers.

What is an NFC Google review card?

An NFC Google review card is a small plastic or metal card with a tiny wireless chip inside. When a customer taps their smartphone on the card, their phone instantly opens your Google review page — ready for them to leave a 5-star rating. No app download, no typing your business name into search, no friction.

The result: happy customers who might never have left a review actually do — because it takes them under 10 seconds.

The technology: what is NFC?

NFC stands for Near Field Communication. It's the same short-range wireless tech that powers Apple Pay, Google Pay, and contactless bank cards. Every modern smartphone — iPhones (iPhone 7 and newer) and virtually all Android phones from the last decade — has an NFC reader built in and switched on by default.

Short-range

Works from about 1–4 cm — a deliberate tap, not a random scan.

No battery

The chip is powered by the phone's NFC signal. Cards last forever.

No app

Every modern phone reads NFC natively. Customers just tap.

How pre-programming works

When you order a Tap Reviews card, you give us three details at checkout: your business name, address, and phone number. We use those to find your Google Business Profile and generate your unique Google review URL — the same link you'd get from Google's "Ask for reviews" feature.

We then write that link onto the NFC chip inside your card using a specialised NFC writer and lock it so it can't be accidentally overwritten. Your card ships ready to use — no setup, no app, no configuration on your end.

The whole process, step by step

  1. You order a card and enter your business details at checkout.
  2. We locate your Google Business Profile and generate your review link.
  3. We write and lock the link onto the NFC chip inside your card.
  4. The card ships to you within a few days, ready to use.
  5. Place it on your counter. Customers tap. Reviews appear on Google.

How to use an NFC Google review card

Using the card is even simpler than setting one up. Place it somewhere visible — the front counter, the reception desk, next to the card machine, or on each table. When a customer has a great experience, hand them the card and say "tap your phone on this to leave us a quick review."

On iPhone, they just hold the top of the phone near the card while the screen is on — a notification pops up, they tap it, and your Google review page opens. On Android, they unlock the phone and touch the back of it to the card — same result.

Why frictionless reviews grow your business

The average happy customer never leaves a review. Not because they didn't enjoy the service — but because remembering, searching, and typing feels like effort. NFC cards remove every one of those steps.

  • More reviews mean higher local search rankings on Google Maps.
  • A higher star rating directly lifts click-through rate and conversion.
  • Recent reviews signal to Google — and customers — that you're active and trusted.

Frequently asked questions

Do customers need to download an app?

No. NFC is built into every modern smartphone. Customers just tap and the Google review page opens in their browser.

Does the card work with iPhone and Android?

Yes — every iPhone from iPhone 7 onwards and virtually all Android phones support NFC out of the box.

Can the link be changed later?

We lock the chip so it can't be accidentally overwritten. If your Google listing details change significantly, we can re-program a replacement card.

How long does the card last?

The NFC chip has no battery and no moving parts. As long as the card itself is intact, it will keep working indefinitely.

Can one customer tap it more than once?

Yes — but Google only counts one review per person per business. The card just opens the review page; Google handles the rest.
